A Massive Thanks & BIG ‘BEAR HUGS’ from Kangaboy!
Militant conservationists on Friday hailed Japan’s decision to halt a controversial whaling mission (illegal mass slaughter), while Australia and New Zealand called for a permanent end to the hunts.
Captain Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, said Japan’s shock withdrawal from the hunting grounds was “great news” after his group’s seven-year harassment campaign in icy seas off Antarctica.
“It’s great news. We will, however, stay with the Japanese ships until they return north and make sure that they’re out of the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary,” Watson told AFP.
“Personally I don’t trust them, but I will take their word on this and we will follow them out. We’re just not going to leave them until we know for sure that they’re out of the Southern Ocean.”
Australia and New Zealand also welcomed the move by Japan. Last year Australia launched an international legal bid to stop Japan killing whales using a loophole in a global moratorium.
“I’m glad this season is over and Australia doesn’t believe there should ever be another whaling season again,” said Australia’s Environment Minister Tony Burke.
Opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt said Japan’s decision was a good start but represented only a “temporary stay of execution” for the whales.
“We need to make sure that this is the end of whaling in the Antarctic – for good.”
In 2009, the European Union pledged to ban the sale of all new animal-tested cosmetics by 2013. But cosmetic industry officials want the deadline delayed further, possibly another ten years.
TAKE ACTION: Tell the EU not to delay the 2013 the ban on the sale of new animal-tested cosmetics. »
If the 2013 deadline is kept, the sale of ALL new animal-tested cosmetics will be eradicated from the EU — hopefully starting a world-wide revolution in cosmetic testing.

Australia will initiate legal action in the International Court of Justice in The Hague against Japan’s so-called “scientific” whaling in the Southern Ocean, three Rudd government ministers announced today.
It has taken three years, but finally the government of Kevin Rudd has decided to act on their election promise of 2007. Australia is officially initiating a legal action against Japanese whaling in the International Court of Justice in the Hague, Netherlands. “The Australian government has not taken this decision lightly,” Environment Protection Minister Peter Garrett, Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith and Attorney-General Robert McClelland said in a statement…. read more at SEA SHEPHERD website
Thanks to the amazing dedication of the Pacific Environment organization and all who made the urgent simple effort to sign their petitions and attend their rallies urging President Barack Obama to halt the planned exploration drilling in the Arctic, today we are able to share Great News!
President Barack Obama announced new steps today to deal with the aftermath of the Gulf oil spill. The President said he was suspending planned exploration drilling in the Arctic. He also said he was canceling planned leases off the coast of Virginia and the Gulf of Mexico and extended a moratorium on new deepwater drilling, and suspended action on 33 deepwater exploratory wells under way in the Gulf of Mexico.
Thanks to this decision, the Arctic is spared for the moment. Shell had planned to start drilling in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas in just 35 days but now we have a bit more breathing room to work on long-term solutions for keeping the Arctic clean for Alaska Native peoples and wildlife.
We applaud the decision by the Obama administration to halt drilling. This is a tremendous reprieve for the Alaska Native communities that depend on the Arctic for their traditional livelihoods. This decision will, for the moment, protect the ecosystems and wildlife of the Arctic and other U.S. coastal areas!
But this suspension is just that: a 6-month suspension. We need to establish a complete moratorium on offshore drilling in the Arctic. It is simply unsafe to drill there.
