Fantastic AAF News Out Of China…

Chinese people say enough! Help us end the cruelty
Dear Kangaboy Fans and Animal Lovers alike,I really wanted to share this fantastic news from Animals Asia of Awareness and Protest Events happening in China against the Bear Bile Farming Industry there.

Yes this is finally taking hold in ‘China’, this is a dramatic shift in human attitude and consciousness there, Animals Asia Foundation and all of us supporting them is making head ways, there is finally ‘real’ hope for these poor bears, the following is the latest newsletter from Animals Asia…

It’s been an amazing few weeks in China, with the people standing up against bear farming like never before. Massive countrywide condemnation of the bear-bile industry is saturating the news and putting bear farmers on the defensive.

We’ve been working to end bear farming in China for nearly two decades, and we’ve never seen anything like this. In February alone, more than 8,000 articles related to our work to end bear farming ran in the Chinese press. And hundreds of thousands of people went online to voice their outrage at an industry that cages bears for life and abuses them beyond belief.

The unprecedented outcry was sparked by an attempt by bear-bile business Guizhentang to list on the Shenzhen stock exchange, and the company’s outrageous claim that the bears felt no pain during bile extractions. Guizhentang is still awaiting approval for its initial public offering, which it hopes will finance the expansion of its bear farm, from 400 bears to 1,200.

Local journalists invited to the company’s bear farm to witness a bear being milked of bile in an apparently pain-free procedure were not impressed, with many claiming it was a staged show. Nor were they fooled when the pro-bear farming China Association of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) made a desperate attack against Animals Asia, accusing us of harming TCM, which of course couldn’t be further from the truth.

We’ve always known that truth was our best weapon — and we’re seeing the results of that now. Many years ago, a sympathetic Chinese official gave me some truly great advice….. he said to start the debate in China. So that’s what we did….. by letting as many people as possible know about the true horror behind the bear-bile industry. And over the past 10 years, we’ve seen a few grumbles grow to a country-wide roar.

The recent outrage reached its peak when the head of the pro-industry TCM group claimed at a press conference that “the process of extracting bear bile was as easy, natural and painless as turning on a tap”. Flooded with media enquiries, we held our own press conference in Beijing and appealed for a timetable to phase out the industry. The room was packed with Chinese and foreign media.

Given Animals Asia’s unique knowledge of the pathology of “free-drip bears” it wasn’t hard to refute the industry’s claims. Dr Monica Bando, a vet at our China sanctuary, explained the terrible health consequences for bears that had been subjected to this method of bile extraction, which is still permitted in China.

  • A study of 165 free-drip bears at our China sanctuary revealed that 99 per cent had cholecystitis;
  • 34 per cent had herniation of the abdominal wall; 22 per cent had gallstones;
  • 34 per cent had internal abscesses; and 4 per cent had peritonitis.

Monica said most bears came to us with a shocking and painful mix of a number of these pathologies.

Also at the press conference, we released undercover footage of bears on bile farms – excerpts from a new Chinese-language documentary. The shocking footage, which shows appalling levels of cruelty, was filmed secretly over 2009 and 2010 by a team of brave independent Chinese film-makers who posed as buyers to gain entry to bile farms in six provinces.

What a week it was. We even had a visit at our China sanctuary from basketball legend Yao Ming. This amazingly kind and modest man is now one of our strongest voices. And we saw other Chinese celebrities, as well as TCM experts, business leaders, academics and opinion-shapers all stepping up to call for an end to bear farming.

The momentum for change is now at a critical point. I’ve always said that together we could end bear farming….. I truly feel that today we’re closer than ever. Thank you for being such an important part of this amazing journey. Please stay with us now….. and until this terrible cruelty ends for good.

Your gift will help with the vital work at our sanctuaries and in the wider community.

  • Animals Asia’s vets continue gathering irrefutable evidence that the bile industry can never be humane….. and their research is revealing real risks to humans who consume the bile from such sick bears.
  • Our senior Chinese staff are continuing vital negotiations with leaders in Beijing and decision-makers at the provincial level.
  • Our public awareness and education campaigns are having a huge impact in China, changing attitudes among people of all ages….. from schoolchildren to senior citizens.

Please give whatever you can afford….. and help us finish what we started.

Now is the time for bear farming to end.

Bear hugs,

Jill

Navy Sonars Killing Marine Mammals…

Wildlife protection agency challenged for not doing its job
January 26, 2012: San Francisco, CA — A coalition of conservation and American Indian groups today sued the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for failing to protect thousands of whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and sea lions from U.S. Navy warfare training exercises along the coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington.
KANGABOY: “It’s about time! … This is fantastic! I’ve blogged about this before in relation to the deaths of Marine Mammals along Australia’s coast lines and in Europe during the presence of Navy Submarines. We need this same ‘above’ action in Australia!”

“Mandatory Labelling of Palm Oil” NOW..

Why This Is Important

Palm oil production is the single biggest threat to South East Asian rainforests.
Palm oil is found in over 40% of the food products on our shelves.
Palm oil isn’t even labeled in Australia. The average Australian consumes 10kg of Palm Oil every year.
Once palm oil is labelled, consumers can actually drive a market for proper certified sustainable palm oil because they can demand it of manufacturers.

Stop U.S. Malls From Selling Exotic Animals

Sugar gliders are native to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. They live communally in groups of thirty or more and enjoy gliding, playing and searching for food. Yet they are regularly sold to families in U.S. malls.

Tell U.S. malls to leave sugar gliders alone! »

Because of the kiosks’ locations in malls and the species’ cute appearance, shoppers purchase the animals on impulse like toys, oblivious to their special, long-term needs.

Sugar gliders’ natural diet consists of native insects, wattle gum and eucalyptus sap, which U.S. shoppers rarely have access to. Most U.S. vets also have no resources to provide sugar gliders with health.

Sugar gliders deserve to live in their native habitat, where they can glide, play with their family members and search for food. Shoppers do not need these pets and typically grow bored with them shortly after purchase.

Please sign the petition to convince U.S. Congress to outlaw the sale of sugar gliders at malls. »

Western black rhino declared extinct

Africa’s western black rhino is now officially extinct according the latest review of animals and plants by the world’s largest conservation network.

The subspecies of the black rhino — which is classified as “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species — was last seen in western Africa in 2006.

The IUCN warns that other rhinos could follow saying Africa’s northern white rhino is “teetering on the brink of extinction” while Asia’s Javan rhino is “making its last stand” due to continued poaching and lack of conservation.

‘Lack of conservation’ includes ‘lack of habitat’ due to thousands of hectares every day being replaced with Palm Oil Plantations for you and me, and by eating foods that use palm oil as an ingredient, Western consumers are directly fueling the destruction of orangutan habitat and sensitive ecosystems.

If the current rate of habitat decline continues, the Sumatran orangutan may become the first of the great apes living today to go extinct in the wild. A new UNEP/GRASP report warns that local populations in parts of Sumatra could disappear as early as 2015.

Educate yourself NOW and do your best to STOP your direct funding of this habitat destruction and extinction of the Orangutans, Asian Rhino, Asian Elephant & Asian Tiger…

URGENT! Help End Shark Fishing…

Will You Still Fear Them When They’re Gone?

Hi everyone
Sea Shepherd Gold Coast just received an inspiring e-mail from Madison Stewart, a 17 year old who has devoted her life to shark conservation. Madi has been working with sharks since she was twelve years old- scuba diving and free diving- plus she started underwater filming at the age of fourteen. Madi has been working on a very important project for some time now and needs your help. She is seeking as many people as possible to write a submission to the Sustainable Fisheries, before October 21st. Please see the following e-mail…

Many grave injustices of the past have one thing in common… they were defeated by a growing education of the people, and pressure for change. One of those injustices is occurring right now in our waters.

In 2009, under the former minister Peter Garett, licenses as part of the East Coast Inshore Fin-fish Fishery (ECIFF) were approved, allowing 200 commercial gill-net vessels to target sharks INSIDE the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World Heritage Area. 600 tonnes of shark is removed legally each year, the meat sold for cheap fish and chips etc, and the valuable fins contribute to export markets for Asian delicacy’s. Meanwhile, research shows populations of some species to be down by as much as 97% on the GBR, and decreasing annually. The by-catch and target catch of the fishery includes a number of protected and critically endangered species, and majority of the target species are yet to be studied, meaning we have no idea what this level of fishing is doing to their populations. This fishery is potentially threatening to the entire ecosystem with effects already being witnessed. Sharks are apex predators at the top of the food chain, incredibly slow growing, and having very few young. There is no evidence to show the GBR will survive this mass extraction of sharks…

The fate of the oceans should be in the hands of those who know and respect the equilibrium they require to function… and now they can be… Have your say, put in your submission… send an email to sustainablefisheries@environment.gov.au, or visit my website for more information, or to send a letter already written up for you, http://elements5.blogspot.com/ Submissions close October 21st, our reaction… is their only hope.

Please join Kangaboy to show our Government, for the sake of millions of animals, that this is simply not acceptable. Big THANKS to Animals Australia for making our voices heard for the voiceless & defenseless.

URGENT! Turtle Torture Event Scheduled!

Warning: Disturbing footage.
Stop this event by calling and/or writing today! Email addresses & phone numbers below.

Ohio County, Indiana, is home to an extraordinarily cruel event called “Snapperfest”—next scheduled for this Saturday, August 20! Every year at the Campshore Campground, wild-caught snapping turtles endure terrible violence at the hands of participants. The frightened animals are grabbed by their tails and repeatedly slammed to the ground. Their heads are yanked from their shells, and they are then swung around until “contestants” are able to wrap their fists around the animals’ necks.

STOP THIS EVENT!

PETA, without success, appealed to the compassion of the Ohio County commissioners. Now it’s your turn. Please contact the commissioners and the campground and politely ask that they do the right thing and replace this cruel event. And please spread this alert far and wide.
